Abstract

The History of Russian-Israeli relations can’t be confined to merely bilateral interstate relations: one must put them into a broader context that covers the history of the Jewish community in the Russian Empire up to the 1917 Revolution and its active participation both in foundation of the Soviet state and subsequent formative processes inside it. This article considers critically important events in Soviet-Zionist relations that took place prior to the foundation of the Jewish state and in the aftermath of it – from 1941 up to 1953. The current research is based upon published documents dealing with the relationship between the USSR and Israel. All cited documents were published in “Documents on Israeli-Soviet Relations, 1941-1953”, Moscow, 2000, and “Middle East Conflict. Documents of State Archives of the Foreign Policy of Russian Federation. I. 1947-1957, II. 1957-1967” Moscow, 2003.
